Spam - You know it was coming

image

When I was growing up, I was raised to dislike Spam.  Now that I’m all grown up, I have welcomed it back into my life.  To me, it’s a comfort food.  It’s what I want when I’m having a bad day.  So I am declaring that I am doing a whole series just about spam.  It’s cheap, it’s good, just admit it.  But since I’m getting a little older, I go for the low sodium variety.  Stay tuned for some of my adventures with spam.

Mini Review: Villa Capri 2 - San Diego, California

image

Villa Capri 2 is tucked away in a shopping center in a newly developed residential area of North San Diego.  The thing is that Villa Capri 2 is the only real sit down restaurant in the area.  I work about a block away from here, and we go here all the time.  I would compare them to Buca di Beppo, but less noisy and more intimate.  Buca is like going to a zoo.

To get your best bang for the buck, I would come to Villa Capri during lunch.  Here’s their lunch menu.  Although the lunch specials are not printed, they average around $14 a person.  You get an appitizer, your main dish, and a dessert.  That’s not bad if you asked me.  My favorite combo here is the fried calamari and the spaghetti.  They do have pretty awesome salads too.

If you live around the area, I would give them a try.

Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles - Pasadena, California

image

Everyone says I have to try Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles.  And when I finally went, I couldn’t figure out what the fuss was all about.  I’m sure a lot of people will disagree with me, but this is my honest opinion.

Spicy Sausage Pasta from Sam the Cooking Guy

image

I watch a lot of Food TV.  However, some of the things they make may seem easy, but are too complicated to make or take up too much time.  When I moved to San Diego, I started watching Sam the Cooking Guy (LINK HERE).  One of his favorite dishes seem really easy to make and fast too cook.  That’s awesome because I don’t have much time to spend on cooking food after work.  This recipe is really really easy and could be done in under 30 minutes.  I did however replace the whipping cream with milk.

Here’s the recipe:

Review:  Dumpling 10053 El Monte, California

image

Good dumplings are hard to find.  But thankfully in the San Gabriel Valley, Dumpling 10053 is there to satisfy your dumpling cravings.  Noodles and other common Chinese cold dishes are available.  However, the place is named Dumpling 10053 for a reason.

Once you order your dumplings, you have a good 15 minutes to wait while your dumplings are prepared.  Here’s where you prepare your sauce.  On every table, you have a tray of soy sauce, vinegar, sesame oil, black pepper, and chili to customize to your heart’s content.  Always add the pepper last because it will clump and not mix well.

Cheap Eats:  Costco Hot Dogs

image

I’m fascinated by Costco lately.  The snack counter offers some really good cheap eats without the need of their membership.  On this occasion, I went for the guilty pleasure of their Hot Dogs.  For a mere $1.50, you get a big 1/4 lbs. Hebrew National hot dog cradled inside a sesame bun and a drink.  I don’t know about you, but that screams deal to me.

I wouldn’t recommend the Costco Dog if you’re looking for something gourmet.
